Mom has son help steal charity jar from store, police say | Crime
CLOVER - A mother was arrested this week after she allegedly used her son to help her pull off the robbery of a charity cash jar at a convenience store, police said.
The incident happened at a gas station's store on Main Street in Clover, police said.
Police were called by the clerk, who told them a mother and a boy entered the store and that the boy asked the clerk to get something from behind the counter.
As the clerk at was turning around behind the counter, the entire charity cash jar that was on the counter was taken, police said
A review of the security tape at the BP station's Quick-E-Mart later confirmed the clerk's story that happened on April 30 at 9:15 p.m., police said in a report
After taking the jar, which contained nearly $40, the woman and her son fled the store's parking lot "quickly" in a car.
Two days later, police saw a car that matched the description and pulled over the driver.
After police confronted the woman, she told police the amount of money in the jar -- $18 in coins and $19 in bills – and said that she threw the jar away.
She also said that her son played a role in the robbery -- he asked the clerk for lotion that was behind the counter, which enabled her to take the charity jar while they thought the clerk was not looking.
Ella C. Clark, 39, of Holland Road in Rock Hill, was charged with larceny and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
It's unclear exactly which charity was supposed to benefit from the cash in the jar at the store.
