CHS Men’s Soccer Earns NSCAA Academic All-American Honors | Community Spirit
CLOVER–The Clover High School 2011 men’s varsity soccer team has earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award for exemplary performance in the classroom as a team during the 2010-11 academic year. The honor is the third consecutive All-American award for the Blue Eagles.
One of only 350 programs in the country to earn the honor from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, CHS men’s soccer posted a team GPA of 3.72 on a 4.0 scale. To qualify for the ward, teams must earn a GPA of at least 3.25 on a 4.0 point scale. The Blue Eagles are one of 14 teams in South Carolina to be named a Team Academic All-American. Their GPA ranks them 25th highest in the nation among all men’s soccer programs in the country and 107th among all 22,276 men’s and women’s high school soccer programs in the United States.
The following students were members of the varsity squad in Spring, 2011: Alex Colon, Austin Burks, Austin Schlirf, Brad Johnson, Chandler McGill, Chris Cook, Daniel Gray, David Hawk, Davontay Brown, Dillon Pundt, Gunnar Oepen, John Hamilton, Kurt Widenhouse, Matt Edwards, Nathan Vogt, Nevada Henderson, Paul Sudol, Pierce Sutton, Rick Mashburn, Stephen Burks, and Xavier Wiley.
Head coach Khrys Dundr says of his team’s academic performance: “We are just so happy (the boys) understand the importance of their education.”
On the field, the Blue Eagles finished third in Region 3-AAA with a 12-10-1 record. They were finalists at the Byrnes Invitational Tournament, semi-finalists at the Palmetto Cup, and were knocked out of the playoffs by Irmo, which was ranked No. 1 nationally at the time.
