LANCASTER, SC (WBTV) – The scene Tuesday afternoon on Highway 5 in Lancaster County was violent one. A Honda accord crumpled, sitting next to a logging truck.
Kenneth Steele, Jr. collided head on with the empty logging truck and sadly Steele died from his injuries Wednesday.
It's not the first time firefighter James Auten with the Charlotte Road Volunteer Fire Department in Van Wyck has seen a wreck like the one Tuesday.
"I've seen a gracious plenty of wrecks on Highway 5 yes sir," said Auten.
He says about two years ago the South Carolina Department of Transportation added a four foot shoulder to the road and it's helped curb the amount of wrecks on the two lane road but not enough.
"Probably 80 percent of our calls are wrecks and their either Highway 5 or just off Highway 5," said Auten.
Highway 5 is still on the same alignment when it was a rural dirt road.
